Veterans Day Ceremony
November 6, 2018 – Flagler County residents are invited to gather with the Board of County Commissioners to honor the men and women who bravely served in the country’s military at the Veteran’s Day Ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday, November 12.
This year’s ceremony will feature Dr. Hal Kushner, Colonel, U.S. Army (retired). Dr. Kushner received his M.D. from the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond in 1966. He joined the Army in 1965, and served his internship at the hospital of his birth – Tripler Army Medical Center.
Dr. Kushner served with the 1st Squadron, 9th US Cavalry, 1st Air Cavalry Division in Vietnam. He was captured on 2 December, 1967 west of Tam Ky, SVN, and released to American Control in Hanoi on 16 March, 1973.
Dr. Kushner’s military awards include the Silver Star, the Soldiers’ Medal, the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, 3rd award, the Purple Heart, 3rd award, the Army Commendation Medal, and other awards and badges including the Combat Medic Badge and the Senior Flight Surgeon’s Badge.
Dr. Kushner is a member of the National Veterans’ Affairs Advisory Committee on Former Prisoners of War. He is a member of the Vietnamese Helicopter Pilots Association, The Silver Sabre Society, The Order of Military Medical Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross Society (Honorary Flight Surgeon), an honorary life member of the River Rats (Red River Valley Fighter Pilots Association), and was awarded the Order of St Michael Gold Medal in 2016.
Besides featuring Dr. Kushner as guest speaker, the “Flagler County Colonel Gary E. DeKay Veteran of the Year” award recipient will be announced.
The Veterans Day event is sponsored by the Flagler County Commission and the Flagler County Veterans Advisory Council.
Veterans groups to participate include: American Legion Post 115, Amvets Post 113, Marine Corps League 876, Military Officers Association of America, Military Order of the Purple Heart 808, Flagler County Veterans Service Office, and the Knights of Columbus Color Guard 2810, as well as Flagler Palm Coast High School AFJROTC, Matanzas High School Army JROTC, Flagler County Boy Scouts Troop 400, and Flagler County Girl Scouts Troop 872.
The event will be held at the flagpole of the Government Services Building, 1769 E. Moody Boulevard, Bunnell.
